Carrie Fisher shares a laugh with (from left) Harrison Ford, Anthony Daniels (C-3P0), and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), as they take a break from filming the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special. (George Brich)
In 2006, Fisher wrote and performed an autobiographical one-woman show titled Wishful Drinking, which would later be transformed into an actual autobiographical book in 2008 and a Broadway show in 2009. In Wishful Drinking, Fisher revealed not only her struggles with drug abuse and her career in Hollywood, but that she suffered from bipolar disorder as well. In the autobiography, Fisher wrote, “George Lucas ruined my life, and I mean that in the nicest possible way.” This seems to be a common sentiment among the Big Three—Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford—or at least it did for a long while. As mentioned in the previous chapter, people change over time and so has Fisher’s outlook. “Star Wars has been my whole life,” she said in a 2014 interview. “‘I am Leia and Leia is me. We’ve overlapped each other because my life has been so cartoony or superhero-like. By this age, it would be ridiculous if I had a problem with it.”
However, it can’t have been entirely terrible. As Fisher revealed in her 2016 memoir The Princess Diarist, she did what many women have only dreamed of doing: having an affair with Harrison Ford. Fisher, who was 19 at the time she shot Star Wars, fell head over heels for Ford, who was fifteen years older than her (and married, to say the least). Although they shared intimate time together on the set, it was not meant to be, something which devastated a young Fisher, who was a bundle of nerves, anxiety, and yet-to-be-diagnosed bipolar disorder. When asked why she waited four decades to reveal the three-month affair, Fisher was typically candid.
“I’ve spent so many years not telling the story of Harrison and me having an affair on the first Star Wars movie that it’s difficult to know exactly how to tell it now,” she told the Los Angeles Times “I suppose I’m writing this because it’s 40 years later and whoever we were then — superficially at least — we no longer are now.”
With The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, Fisher reprised her role as everyone’s favorite space princess, except this time she was a space general, and no longer sporting her iconic cinnamon buns. In interviews, Fisher proved as acerbic and sharp as ever. When asked about seeing her old castmates again, Fisher said, “We all look a little melted. It’s good to see other melted people.” Likewise, when asked about what Leia would be doing, Fisher replied with a laugh, “She’s in an intergalactic old folks’ home. I just think she would be just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle.” In both of her appearances in the sequel trilogy, Fisher displayed cool ferocity and quiet charisma that made us fall in love with Fisher’s portrayal of Princess Leia in the first place.
